Research interests

I’m a tropical botanist and my current work at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD, France) deals with the study of biogeographical/diversity patterns in Central Africa, using Orchidaceae as a model family. I first became interested in this research area during my Ph.D. studies (2005-2009) in taxonomy, phytogeography and conservation of Orchidaceae in Atlantic Central Africa, at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB, Belgium). Now, I’m also focussing a large part of my research on assessing threatened species and identifying priority areas for conservation.

During the last 13 years, I supervised orchids-collection programs in Cameroon that helped on training local students in taxonomic and conservation study in high-diversity tropical rain forests. I have organized more than 70 fieldwork missions across Central Africa. I also played a key role during the establishment of the shade house network successfully developed in tropical Africa to obtain fertile, identifiable material of orchid taxa. Recently, I became member of the “IUCN SSC Orchid Specialist Group” and, based on previous experiences, I want to continue to gather greater knowledge on the wide range of orchid species, and to promote appropriate and effective conservation measures in the tropical African rainforest. This will make an important contribution to increasing in-country capacity in systematic, field biology, and conservation, while serving as a focus for strengthened collaboration with our local partners in African institutions.
